I have a lot of time sitting around getting chemo, waiting for radiation, and etc. and would like to make a power playlist on my iPod.
Think hard. This is an important mission. Also, I have dibs on the Office theme song as my choice.

Ha. I love the songs/comments posted thus far. I can just hear AC/DCs "Back in Black" blarring at every tailgate for every sporting event in history. Or is that just in the movie "Varsity Blues?" I don't know if you remember, but at the end of our Freshman retreat when we were all gathered in the Brophy gym they played Tom Petty's "Learning to Fly," for all of us. To this day, that song just "does it" for me. If that doesn't work for you, the song from the Karate Kid has to work!!! It's called "You're the Best," by Joe Esposito.

“I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty is a great song about standing your ground and fighting when times are tough.

Yesterday's long awaited news was, as Jim said, Joyous.
Well, the actual award-winning songs are about to be revealed. This is just a sample (I'll make a CD of the final product), but I think it will elevate your spirits and dash those of the other "also ran" contributors: 1) the 1812 Overture - the Russians (the chemo and radiation)kick the butt of the invading French (the cancer) complete with cannons as part of the dramatic finale; 2) William Tell Overture - was the theme for The Lone Ranger tv show (another rousing score in which the Lone Ranger shoots the bad guys with silver bullets - seeing a theme?); 3)the theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark (enough said).
I'm going through my itunes and have around 8 additional sons earmarked so far. More to come. Greg

Ok Steven, I have given your song selection a great deal of thought. First of all, you have a litte of your cousin Lindsay in you thinking one song can put you on the leader board. Number two, Tom Waits is kind of like Leonard Cohen, no matter what is being said it always sounds like a dirge. On the other hand, you are probably in a better position to say what is uplifting than I.
I considered bundling you with your siblings, and that makes a pretty good team. Ryan came through with Elvis which I have to admit amazed me a bit. I still like the check-casher-endorser MC Hammer if for the name only. As a sibling team, you guys could be in the lead........except when I saw Scoot put up "My Dick" paternal pride swallowed me up. Lump that together with Prine and a very good hip-hop mixture (Blackalicious..umm) and my kids sibling package is pretty impressive. The Kings boys are hanging in there, a couple slips (Clarkson and most of Pat's) will probably keep them out of the money. Although, everytime I think of Lauren Hill (Sister Act II) I change my mind. It would be nice to see some of the other Demore girls, God knows there are plenty of them, help out their little sister. She put up a good start and could use a little diversity.

scott, thanks for having my back i think you are the only one! got to say i was upset that you listed "wiseman" by slighty, I was about to put that one in there, but you beat me to the punch!
In response to my turncoat son, should have anticipated this when he chose that university down south, and my brother from another mother, every song on that list was chosen for a reason. I was so excited when Jen put this challenge to us for music has always been the way i get myself to feel. It can make me cry, John Stewart's Kansas, make me mad Belle & Sebastion's Ease Your foot into the Sea, make me happy, Prine's daddy's Little Punkin', or make me long for days gone by, Prine again bur Please Don't Bury Me. I enjoy a wide range of songs because i can usually find one that draws out the emotion I need. And sometimes, they just do when I am not even aware that they are on.
Last night, i tried to imagine i was in your place, Steven. Couldn't come close which is probably good because I surely couldn't handle it as well as you seem to be. But in doing so, I would listen to a song that would just make me mad, like the B & S song mentioned above. I thought, maybe you need some of those also. Your comment about the Killers made me think and interpret songs about death as those fights to kill the cancer. The Beautiful South has always been a band I liked because their melodies belay the message. So, it is a different emotion getting angry that way. Some songs just take me places, Boz Scaggs' Sierra and i would imagine there are times when you would like to get away, even in your mind. Some, like Chantilly Lace, invoke an image of Popi so vivid that it is hard to imagine it is only in the mind. The whole thing is probably summed up best in The Beautiful Girls "Music", which is about just what i am saying.
So, once you receive these I hope they can elicit emotions that help you heal. Music means so much to me, it is such a thrill to try and give you music that could impact emotions that help.

So I have been thinking about more than just songs.....if you are in need of something to occupy your time that does not involve talking or anything too laborous (like watching politics!) I highly suggest The Soprano's. If you have not seen the series already, it is incredibly entertaining and will keep you busy for 86 glorious hours!!! We downloaded them over here since we have no cable and rarely have anything in Engish and were addicted after episode 1. If Sopranos is not your style, I might suggest rewatching all the Seinfelds (another time waster in Thailand) as they take on new meaning now that we are older. Anyway, thought these might come in handy at some point.

Well, it's time for a look at the leader board. Greg, I think Bob Mould's "I don't like Mondays" may be a slight better choice than the Bangles "Manic Monday". If you wanted to go Bangles, I would suugest the Matthew Sweet/Suzanne Hoffs "Touch of the Sun". Scoot, you could have easily propelled our family into the lead for good except your defection to the Novak side with a very inappropriate dis of my extensive post. Although your posting of My Dick has garnered much praise, your disloyalty cost you points. Lindsay must be working too much as her postings have fallen off dramatically. But Scoot's alliance with the Novaks certainly make up for her paucity of ideas. Ellen could have brought us storming back, but somehow confused disc mediums. Must be a Thai thing. The Demore girls have relied too heavily on their sister and have offered no support. It was good to see my old friend Tim put his two cents in though. A little Led Zeppelin is always a good idea. Bean's rendition of small Paul was alittle too little. I am sure if he dug a little deeper he could come up with two ideas. This leaves the King boy's. Danny has rebounded nicely from his initial hiccup, but we all understand keeping the little lady happy thinking you really do like Kelly Clarkson, "no really I do." Pat has shown some eclectism, switching genres better than Kenny Rogers. I have to admit that "Cowgirl in the sand" is one of the best songs ever recorded, just a liitle unsure of its applicability to this site. Oops, I almost from Steven's immediate family. Maybe because I haven't seen much of anything from Amy. The cold Flagstaff air must freeze the creative juices as Mickey has also yet to grace us with his thoughts. So, after much thought, the leader board looks like this:

First of all, I have to come clean on my mea culpa of yesterday. I repeated a song already posted by Lizzie. I beg forgiveness as the Heath Ledger thing had me so distraught, i wasn't thinking clearly.
In light of Steven's new best friend, Nurse Ratchet, today's song has to be Prine's "Some Humans ain't Human."
Bethany, did you know Neil Diamond wrote I'm a Believer?!!!! Huge fan here, so I'll suggest one for Steven's pump-me-up playlist: You Got to Me -- you'll be tapping your feet and playing air tambourine. I think I can convert you with that one, Bethany.
Steven: another Neil -- Song Sung Blue, for when you feel down and since you are so good at making up songs.
Jim, I don't want to hear about Neil unless you can tell me you have been to one of his concerts and honestly say you did not sing along.
The very first concert I went to was Neil Diamond and Linda Ronstadt with my cousin, Jim Scott. I am a big fan. One of my favorites is the entire African Suite from the album Tap Root Manuscript. It became a Christmas play in our household when we were young, although I am not sure why. But, my favorite song of his is the Buffy Saint Marie penned "Until its Time to Go." I also am fond of his version of the old Holly's tune "He Ain't Heavy, He's my Brother", although I prefer the version by The Housemartins. So, no argument from me on Neil.
You also won't get a rise out of me on The Monkees. Like Blink 182, although entirely different genres, their music is all peppy. They don't have a dirge in their repretoire that I know of. And anyone who covers a John Stewart tune is ok by me.
I still want to know what you consider to be the best Bodean's song. I have been a fan of theirs for a long time, but really prefer their early stuff. To illustrate just how long I have been a fan, I bought their first album on vinyl.
As is obvious by the numer of duplicates lately, it is becoming more difficult to come up with ideas. But I will post my song for the day later. We are still planning on coming down on Saturday and my hope is to have a summary of all of these posts on an iPod for Steven's easy listening pleasure. But, I have to admit I will need to swallow my pride when i download some of these ideas from iTunes. I really need Pat C. here to help me with the Hip Hop. He is a walking compendium of that genre.

On days he pitched, they say his elbow swelled to the size of a graprfruit and he'd be in the club house with his elbow immersed in ice long after the place cleared out. Despite his extreme pain, Koufax pitched 26 complete games that season. This recording of Vin Scully calling the last inning of that game is a classic. The only thing I'm not fond of is taht it came at the expense of a club from the North side of Chicago. I hope this is inspiring to you Moke, but I assure you, it pales in comparison to how you inspire me with your strength and humor on a daily basis. Love you, Steven.

Ok, over the weekend I had the pleasure of listening to almost every song posted. I am still convinced that the overall best collection comes from Bethany and Breanne (with a little help from Tim). But, overall best song goes to Skooch for the Social D song, "Angel's Wings". I also have to admit to liking some of Wacky's choices. Most surprising was the Millicon song "Pepper". And my opinion didn't change of the Destiny's Child song. Beyonce' should concentrate on the visual arts, as that is where her strength lies. And worst overall song belongs to Pennywise, the only one I had to skip after a minute or so.
Overall, the list of songs is pretty impressive and well thought out. I hope we didn't all peak too early though. We need to keep the songs flowing.
In that vein, my song for the day is Al Stewart's "Hipposong". Just whimsical enough to lighten the mood.

I got to go to Fr.Becker's funeral service on Monday, which had amazing music (BCP/XCP mini-orchestra) including a song from the soundtrack of The Mission which I love and find inspiring. I think it's Track 5 on the soundtrack, though they're all good. I'll send it your way.
The service was really nice as well, there were a lot of people, and Fr. Olivier gave a great talk. It was good to see some of the old BCP faces, and you're getting lots of prayers from them.
I don't know if this is one you'd want to actually put on your ipod since I believe it is an old Karen Carpenter song. I have never been a big female vocalist fan, but I found myself singing this when my friend Mary Heiland told me to "Keep a song in your heart." The first song that came to mind was "Ooh ooh child,things are gonna get easier. Ooh ooh child things will be brighter...some day." Hang in there if only by your fingertips. Last Sunday at the teen mass at St. Thomas, near Tim's house, their closing words were, "It's 6 o'clock and you are loved." That was Fr. Pat's closer. Jean, I love that you put Ooooh, Child....I LOVE that song too. I first heard it on one of Pat's skate videos and now everytime he goes to watch one (which is quite often) I try to convince him to play "the one with that song." It is so uplifting.
If you are reading this, it also means that I finally figured out how to post for myself....I asked someone to translate it for me.....Little Victories are a big deal here :) I also believe that is a Darden Smith song and might be a good addition to the Ipod.

Darden Smith's "Little Victories" is a very good choice. To celebrate the halfway point, how about Stewart's "Bring it Home". Just skip over the line "ballin' on the road is a poor man's score." It never made any sense to me anyway.

I must agree with dain on this one, last year when i coached hurdles and the 4x4 relays, i had to miss an all female AC/DC cover band playing in Spoklahoma, you can imagine my disappointment at missing a live rendition of AC/DC tributes, as well as the fact that it was being done by 4 blond women. Anyway, i explained to both teams my predicament and my ultimate choice to watch them race, and only left the words, "Hells Bells", as thier inspiration, both teams PR-d and made it to state, so steve

I am not sure you are even checking this part anymore, but your entry today convinced to finally post a song I have been hanging onto because it can be interpreted wrong. But now I am convinced it is a song for you. "Moonshadow" I know you have privately been affected worse than you let us in on. But it does seem that you have been able to bounce back from the havoc being wrecked on your body. This song pretty much says that.
