Songs

Jen thought of a great idea the other day: if you want to, I would love for you to post a song that you think is inspirational, energetic, or helpful to my situation. I have a lot of time sitting around getting chemo, waiting for radiation, and etc. and would like to make a power playlist on my iPod.

Think hard. This is an important mission. Also, I have dibs on the Office theme song as my choice.

A song that means alot to me is:
Bring the rain by Mercyme.
Here is a link to where you can hear it and read the words... http://www.myspace.com/mercyme

How could I not comment on this one. It is like a personal challenge. I might have to provide a daily song. The very first that pops up is one that means a lot to Elz and me, John Hiatt's "Have a little faith in me." I would make a cd but the RCIA has become so aggressive, they may arrest you in mid-mask.

I think of you constantly.

I endorse anything Jim suggests, although he may not remember to put MmmBop! on there. I have some more, however, and will post it or forward it to you when it's polished up a bit...

hi steven,

my cell phone ring is currently "under pressure", by queen. seems like it might be the perfect song for your radiation mask!

but, once i pass (hopefully) my phd exams in march, i have big plans to change the cell phone ring to "walking on sunshine" by katrina and the waves.

you are of course welcome to both songs! i am super excited to one day switch my ring tone over; it sounds really silly, but it really will mark a sort of victory for me. so, maybe it would also be fun for you to start crafting your "cancer free playlist" as well!

take care!

Steven,

Well, I am sorry to join the comment game so late....for some reason everything on the site, except for what you write comes through in Thai, so it took me a bit to figure it all out :)

We think about you all the time and send you so much love and strength. I was so happy to see that your sense of humor is in tact....even though I can imagine you don't feel it sometimes. We are so proud of you for fighting with a smile. This blog is such a great way for you to let everyone who cares about you know how you are doing...thanks so much.

What a great idea, Jen!! As for songs.....I thought of a few and will ask Pat for more when he gets home:

Here is a start:
- Fighter, Christina Aguilera
- Mission, Dispatch
- My Life, Erykah Badu
- Oooh Child, The Five Stairsteps
- Not Ready to Make Nice, Dixie Chicks (always pumps me up to "fight")

Hope this helps!!

Love you so much,
Elz (and Pat)

Steve and Jen: I cannot begin to tell you how much this past weekend meant to me. To witness the incredible tenderness and true compassion that is so present between the two of you is beyond words. Steven, your courage is amazing and Jen, your selfless commitment to Steven's comfort is truly inspirational. I love you both so much.

Lindsay, Amie and I spent our entire ride home discussing songs. Would the milkshake song be considered inspirational......probabaly not, huh?

unclejim said...

Hi dad,

Pat thought of some more songs after work and we were wondering if you could please post this as well...THANKS!!!

Steven, when Ellen told me about your request, I thought of a few songs that either get me amped or just put a smile on my face. I hope that you can get some good use out of them : 'T.N.T'. by AC/DC, 'Crawshay' by Cymande, 'Harder Than You Think' by Public Enemy, 'Days Go Into Nights' & 'Make You Feel That Way' by Blackalicious.
Sending good thoughts your way,
Pat

Ha. I love the songs/comments posted thus far. I can just hear AC/DCs "Back in Black" blarring at every tailgate for every sporting event in history. Or is that just in the movie "Varsity Blues?" I don't know if you remember, but at the end of our Freshman retreat when we were all gathered in the Brophy gym they played Tom Petty's "Learning to Fly," for all of us. To this day, that song just "does it" for me. If that doesn't work for you, the song from the Karate Kid has to work!!! It's called "You're the Best," by Joe Esposito.

Steve
I told my other Greek friend Michael about you and asked for some song suggestions. Here is what he said:
"I'm very sorry to hear about the condition your friend is in. I wish him well and pray for his speedy recovery. Some of the best inspirational songs I know are off the "Gladiator" motion picture soundtrack. Songs from this include: "Now we are Free" by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard, and "Gladiator" by City of Prague Philharmonic, and "Elysium" by Klaus Badelt and Lisa Gerrard. OVERALL THIS ENTIRE SOUNDTRACK IS EXCELLENT!
I also like the CD by artist, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. His song "Wonderful World" is AMAZING. This entire CD is good too."

Steve,
Your blog has been an encouragement for me to read even tho we have not met. A song that I've enjoyed in the past is by James Taylor, "You've got a friend" of which you appear to have many! Another one is "We are the champions" but I'm afraid I don't know who sings it. Maybe you do. I hope you enjoy them both and that they don't "age" me!

breanne demore said...

Hey Steve! Bethany told me about this and I got really excited because I always have those songs that make me feel better. So I made a list for you. Some of the songs are fun, some are meaningful and some are just really good, but all of them are inspirational to me in some way. And I hope that they are to you as well.
When Finally Set Free- Copeland
With A Little Help From My Friends- The Beatles
The Cure for Pain- Jon Foreman
Sweet Talk- The Killers
All These Things That I've Done-
The Killers
Plug In Baby- Muse
Hey Ya- Obadiah Parker
Snow (Hey Oh)- The Red Hot Chili
Peppers
Chasing Cars- Snow Patrol
Learning to Breathe- Switchfoot
Only Hope- Switchfoot
The Shadow Proves the Sunshine-
Switchfoot
Awakening- Switchfoot
Let Your Love Be Stong- Switchfoot
Walk On- U2
I hope that these songs help you and know that you are always in our prayers!

Second day's song is a bit unusual, maybe a bit too dated, but one that always brings me up. "Sing to God a Brand new Canticle" by the Brophy scholastics known as the New Day Singers. Can't help but clap.

Hope week two is bearable.

Our love to you.

Hey T I can think of one that is a pretty upbeat pump up song that I definitely would look up, it is called Remember the Name by Fort Minor. They played this song before the playoff games on ABC last year. Also La Grange by ZZ Topp. I love you so much and am thinking about you.

I think I'm taking Lindsay down with this one:

MC Hammer's '2 Legit 2 Quit'

Love you brother

unclejim said...

I am not sure how Lindsay figures she captured the lead with one suggestion, and a weak one at that. Steven did ask us to think hard, not just say the first thing that came to our minds. Very disappointing. Amy's is not bad.

Song for the day, "Don't worry, 'bout a thing. Cause every little things going to be alright." Bob Marley, Three Little Birds.

Still thinking of you constantly.

lindsayellen said...

actually jim...my original suggestion was "Break my Stride" by the one hit wonder matthew wilder...which is the most inspirational song ever written in the history of the world...plus MC Hammer is now bankrupt and probably doing commercials for Checks Cashed..which isnt very inspirational. i love both of you but you're both going down.

...oh and i love you, steven.

Steve, I am a friend of your dad's from the Y and I met you there before. Just want you to know I am thinking of you and hoping and praying for the best. If you are feeling mellow and need a few songs to remind you of all the great friends supporting you (and your blog makes it obvious you have a lot of supporters)I'd try Bridge over Troubled Water, Simon and Garfunkel or You've got a Friend, James Taylor.

Take care, Susan Stuart

You've got me on a mission. So far I've come up with these songs:
"Either way" by Wilco
"Sky Blue Sky" by Wilco
"Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac
"Immigrant Song" by led zeppelin (gotta love it)

Also, you can't go wrong with some uplifting Coldplay. I don't know if you've listened to Sufjan Stevens at all, but his music is very healing and spiritual to me, check him out. In particular the song "Chicago". I'll be back with some more soon!

You and your family are in my thoughts every day...

Love,

Some of us old SUXC boys would like to come visit you if possible. We could make almost anything work, whether it is a quick hello over lunch or long weekend. When you get a chance shoot me an email (Lybarger@gmail.com) or give me call (720-565-0312).

As for songs, “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban is a powerful song about finding strength. It starts out slow but finishes strong.

“I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty is a great song about standing your ground and fighting when times are tough.

I just thought I would leave you with a quote from Rocky Balboa:
“Life isn't about how hard you hit,
It's about how hard you can get hit
And keep moving forward.”

If there is anything I can do to help you keep moving forward while you are getting hit, just ask.

My prayers are with you,

Here are my songs. I am going to bring you a CD with them on it.

Since You've Been Gone--Kelly Clarkson (It is pretty much the greatest song ever)

The Best of Whats Around--Dave Matthews Band (although I can only decipher half of the words that Dave is saying, they sound pretty good)

Running on Faith--Eric Clapton (A little bit bluesy, but good.)

Ready or Not--The Fugees (Wylcef and Lauren Hill with Enya in the background are legit)

The Message--Nas (Its good to add a little flava)

Juicy--the Notorious B.I.G. (enough said)

Evenflow--Pearl Jam (the best song of our sixth grade year)

Bombtrack--Rage Against the Machine (For those times when you you feel like you need an extra dose of rage).

Steven,

You may have started another whole idea, what is causing your headaches. My current thoughts,
1. Hillary's tears
2. Corn going into gas tanks
3. The thought of having a cousin who thinks a Kelley Clarkson song can be #1 on any list

When I read Amy's earlier post, my eyes filled with tears of joy. I do believe your progress is now towards a successful conclusion. All of our prayers, and there are a lot of them, were answered.

A final thought, you think maybe your head is just having a tough time handling the stress? Heck, a lot less stress makes my head hurt. Just thinking there are those out there that agree that Lindsay is in the lead is making mine throb right now.

We all send our love.

5. Lust for Life by Iggy Pop
6. The New Workout Plan by Kanye West.

Steven -
Yesterday's long awaited news was, as Jim said, Joyous.
Well, the actual award-winning songs are about to be revealed. This is just a sample (I'll make a CD of the final product), but I think it will elevate your spirits and dash those of the other "also ran" contributors: 1) the 1812 Overture - the Russians (the chemo and radiation)kick the butt of the invading French (the cancer) complete with cannons as part of the dramatic finale; 2) William Tell Overture - was the theme for The Lone Ranger tv show (another rousing score in which the Lone Ranger shoots the bad guys with silver bullets - seeing a theme?); 3)the theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark (enough said).
I'm going through my itunes and have around 8 additional sons earmarked so far. More to come. Greg

Rye Bread said...

How about that song by the Foo Fighters "All my Life" Maybe the I love it but I hate that taste line for the song would go well with the chemo. Love you and am happy that you passed your test.

Stevey Steve! I am so impressed by your strength and positivity (I don't think positivity is a word, but I am making it your word because it fits and I don't care if its in the dictionary!). The many postings from your friends and family sending you their love and supporting you through this is a true testament to your amazing spirit and goodness. I recently saw the movie "Juno" and immediately fell in love with the soundtrack (it has a great diversity of artists from Buddy Holly to Velvet Underground to Belle and Sebastian and the random mix of music is super upbeat; I think you'll agree that many of the songs are directly relevant to you and Jenny and the strength of your love and friendship.) I put it on a CD for you and will mail it off as soon as I make it to the PO. Keep filling your mind with positive thoughts and I'll do the same. *We are what we think. Danny,

Don't ever embarrass the family like that again. If you do, your Cardardy status will be suspended and possibly revoked.

Moke, my songs in no particular order:

(1) John Hiatt -- "Have a little faith in me" (which is probably already on the Jim's list somewhere...yep, it's there);

(2) Pennywise -- "Bro hymm," especially this verse:
"Ever get the feeling you can't go on
Just remember whose side it is that you're on
You've got friends with you till the end
If you're ever in a tough situation
we'll be there with no hesitation
Brotherhood's our rule we cannot bend."

(3) U2 ("Walk on")

And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it's a long way off
And if your glass heart should crack
And for a second you turn back
Oh no, be strong

Walk on, walk on
What you got they can't steal it
No they can't even feel it
Walk on, walk on...
Stay safe tonight"

Much love Moke. I'll be down there soon!

Wow. That's a lot of bitterness towards the uncomparable Kelly Clarkson. Be honest everyone. When you hear, "Here's the thing we started out friends, it was cool, but it was all pretend" it gets you going. I am sorry I am the only one with the courage to admit it. Billy, I think you went to her concert. Did you not? Anyways, Steve I am glad to hear about the good news and hope on visiting soon.

Today's song - Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head.

Lindsay has slightly redeemed herself, finally. She should be firmly in third, nestled behind Tim and Debbie's daughter, the Switchfoot heavy Breanne ( she gets credit for having the nerve to put Killers in these posts) Finally, we have to cut Danny some slack as he did post the Fugees with the really incomparable Lauren Hill.

I am curious about something. Am I the only one who has trouble reading those letters we have to unscrabble? Damn, I just got rejected again.

Hi Dad,

So I was hoping you could post some more songs for Steven for me....there seems to be quite a contest and it is getting a bit nasty :)

Ok Steven, I thought of some more.....every time I go to the gym, I end up flipping through songs on my Ipod trying to find more for you....so here is what I found today:

First and foremost I am SHOCKED to not see any Prine on the list yet, just shocked, how about Thats's the Way the World Goes Round/Happy Enchilada, or Big Fat Love (just cause you are getting a lot of it). Also, thought Zorba the Greek might be fun. And Jill Scott's Let it Be.

I want to send a song to Jen too just as a thank you for taking such good care of you.....a love song for you both, Mellow Mood by Slightly Stoopid.

Ok, well, I thought I had more, but I forgot in between the gym and now.....till next time,

Big hugs,
Elz

Scoot said...

Well Steven, I don't have many inspirational songs, so I will have to go with a couple songs that always get me pretty pumped up or at least always put me in a good mood when I listen to them.
1. I'm shipping up to boston by dropkick murphys
2. Wiseman by slightly stoopid
3. I believe in a thing called love by the darkness
4. My dick by mickey avalon
5. Juke box hero by foreigner

Love you

To all who have posted, I have a request: If you have a copy of the songs you posted, put them on a cd and get them to me. I will then choose an iPod that will hold whatever is sent, transfer them to the iPod under playlists with each persons name, and get the iPod to Steven. Feel free to add more songs, but make sure you give me a playlist of what is on the Cd by song and author. Mary Anne and I are going to go down next week, if all goes right, so the sooner you get them to me the better. Elz and Pat, I will get yours from another source.

If you need my address, call me at 623-561-1572.

Thanks to all.

59th Street bridge Song (Feeling groovey) Simon & Garfunkel

unclejim said...

Ok Steven, I have given your song selection a great deal of thought. First of all, you have a litte of your cousin Lindsay in you thinking one song can put you on the leader board. Number two, Tom Waits is kind of like Leonard Cohen, no matter what is being said it always sounds like a dirge. On the other hand, you are probably in a better position to say what is uplifting than I.

I considered bundling you with your siblings, and that makes a pretty good team. Ryan came through with Elvis which I have to admit amazed me a bit. I still like the check-casher-endorser MC Hammer if for the name only. As a sibling team, you guys could be in the lead........except when I saw Scoot put up "My Dick" paternal pride swallowed me up. Lump that together with Prine and a very good hip-hop mixture (Blackalicious..umm) and my kids sibling package is pretty impressive. The Kings boys are hanging in there, a couple slips (Clarkson and most of Pat's) will probably keep them out of the money. Although, everytime I think of Lauren Hill (Sister Act II) I change my mind. It would be nice to see some of the other Demore girls, God knows there are plenty of them, help out their little sister. She put up a good start and could use a little diversity.

That's how I see as of right now.

I wish you well, more than you will ever know.

I don't know why Jim thinks he's large Marge and in Charge. I happen to think Scooters selection indicates he may have a future at Checks Cashed......Another selection "Let the Mystery Be." Iris Dementh (sp.)

"ramble on" led zeppelin, "you've got a friend" james taylor, "banana pancakes" jack johnson that song just makes you feel good! "can i kick it" tribe called quest, "the wind" cat stevens, "cowgirl in the sand" neil young. last but certainly not least "pour some sugar on me" by the one and only DEF LEPARD. I am sure I am wearing out my welcome ill limit it to two songs a day from here on out! have a goodnight moke!

I think if you listen to these, you won't even need further treatment:
1) That's the Way the World Goes 'Round (Mr. John Prine);
2)Here comes the Sun (The Fab 4);
3)I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) Proclaimers;
4)Big Joe (John Stewart - in the days before even Walkmans I ran my first 10K with this song in my head);
5)There She Goes (Boo Radleys);
6)Saturday Nights (Ned's Atomic Dustin);
7) Start Me Up (Stones);
8)Oh Happy Day (Edwin Hawkins Singers);
9) Big Iron (Marty Robbins - balad of an Arizona Ranger kicking some serious outlaw butt);
9)Shout (Otis Day and the Knights);
Well, looks like the Novaks just opened up an insurmountable lead. As Shelly said, "Look on my works, ye mighty, and dispair!"

But I will leave you with these...

Two words: "Float On" (by Modest Mouse)

And another one that I believe will take the cake... "Angels Wings" by Social Distortion

scott, thanks for having my back i think you are the only one! got to say i was upset that you listed "wiseman" by slighty, I was about to put that one in there, but you beat me to the punch!

unclejim said...

In response to my turncoat son, should have anticipated this when he chose that university down south, and my brother from another mother, every song on that list was chosen for a reason. I was so excited when Jen put this challenge to us for music has always been the way i get myself to feel. It can make me cry, John Stewart's Kansas, make me mad Belle & Sebastion's Ease Your foot into the Sea, make me happy, Prine's daddy's Little Punkin', or make me long for days gone by, Prine again bur Please Don't Bury Me. I enjoy a wide range of songs because i can usually find one that draws out the emotion I need. And sometimes, they just do when I am not even aware that they are on.

Last night, i tried to imagine i was in your place, Steven. Couldn't come close which is probably good because I surely couldn't handle it as well as you seem to be. But in doing so, I would listen to a song that would just make me mad, like the B & S song mentioned above. I thought, maybe you need some of those also. Your comment about the Killers made me think and interpret songs about death as those fights to kill the cancer. The Beautiful South has always been a band I liked because their melodies belay the message. So, it is a different emotion getting angry that way. Some songs just take me places, Boz Scaggs' Sierra and i would imagine there are times when you would like to get away, even in your mind. Some, like Chantilly Lace, invoke an image of Popi so vivid that it is hard to imagine it is only in the mind. The whole thing is probably summed up best in The Beautiful Girls "Music", which is about just what i am saying.

So, once you receive these I hope they can elicit emotions that help you heal. Music means so much to me, it is such a thrill to try and give you music that could impact emotions that help.

Well, this is my first entry but I believe I've got a couple pretty good songs to recomment. First, though, I believe that scoot's got two of the best- my dick, which had steve cracking up last night (oral pain notwithstanding), and "angel's wings." I had thought of that one but was obviously a bit late. OK. Here's my first four:

"No woman no cry" Rita Marley
"Never Fallin'" Living Legends
"Pass the Dutchie" Musical Youth.
"Damn it feels good to be a gangsta" Ghetto Boyz.
...and "Michael Bolton's" When a man- oh, wait. That's for the CD I'm making you, Dan.

The Ultimate ever, the one that makes the AMIE and RYAN's take the cake is......."The Final Countdown" by Europe, for when you re just finishing everything and are cancer free. Love you.

I feel the need to come to Dan's defense. Dan, I was in your position a generation ago. The first of my generation to get married. Well, technically Elz beat you but she is a girl, which changes the perspective a bit. Your brothers and cousins are envious that you go to bed everynight with a live female while they are left loping the mule. Makes their putdowns a bit hallow, wouldn't ya say.

Good Morning, Moke -
I've really enjoyed the recent entries - none more than "My Dick" - Hillarious, Scoot. Dan - you really scooped me on Island in the Sun - it's been my ring tone for years. Damn! Here are a few more offerings:

1) Manic Monday (Bangles) figured it might correspond with your weekly treatment schedule;

2) Lump (Presidents);

3)I Get Knocked Down (Chumba Wumba)
4) Promontory (Last of the Mohicans);

5) Don't Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock 'N Roll(Long John Baldry) - this one had Tom playing some pretty mean drums on the kitchen counter a while back;

6)Maroon and Gold (ASU Fight Song -'member those guys?);

7) Notre Dame Fight Song - yeah, I know, not so inpirational lately - might want to pull this one out a few seasons form now.

A CD's on it's way today via Jean. Get ready to be inspired. Love you, Moke.

"What I Got" by Sublime... just to keep you optimistic

Hey Steve,

I was a tad meloncholy driving home from Tucson with your sweet sister, not just because I was worried about you, but more because I knew it might be a bit before I would be able to lay down next to you again while you slept and sneak kisses on those wonderful cheeks of yours. Steve, I know this seems unbearable, but you are such a trooper. You are surrounded by people who literaly follow this blog closer than your dad follows his Blackberry!!!! Your mom and dad are truly inspirational and Ryan and Amie excemplify everything good regarding family. Jen......what can I say? She is my hero.......and I am so grateful that she was placed in the cubicle next to yours!!!!
Two new songs:

Bright Side of the Road - Van Morrison

Hi Dad,

Here is another one for Steven.

Hi Steven,

So I have been thinking about more than just songs.....if you are in need of something to occupy your time that does not involve talking or anything too laborous (like watching politics!) I highly suggest The Soprano's. If you have not seen the series already, it is incredibly entertaining and will keep you busy for 86 glorious hours!!! We downloaded them over here since we have no cable and rarely have anything in Engish and were addicted after episode 1. If Sopranos is not your style, I might suggest rewatching all the Seinfelds (another time waster in Thailand) as they take on new meaning now that we are older. Anyway, thought these might come in handy at some point.

We still think about you daily and send copious amounts of love your way, Many hugs, Love you,
Elz and Pat

Well, it's time for a look at the leader board. Greg, I think Bob Mould's "I don't like Mondays" may be a slight better choice than the Bangles "Manic Monday". If you wanted to go Bangles, I would suugest the Matthew Sweet/Suzanne Hoffs "Touch of the Sun". Scoot, you could have easily propelled our family into the lead for good except your defection to the Novak side with a very inappropriate dis of my extensive post. Although your posting of My Dick has garnered much praise, your disloyalty cost you points. Lindsay must be working too much as her postings have fallen off dramatically. But Scoot's alliance with the Novaks certainly make up for her paucity of ideas. Ellen could have brought us storming back, but somehow confused disc mediums. Must be a Thai thing. The Demore girls have relied too heavily on their sister and have offered no support. It was good to see my old friend Tim put his two cents in though. A little Led Zeppelin is always a good idea. Bean's rendition of small Paul was alittle too little. I am sure if he dug a little deeper he could come up with two ideas. This leaves the King boy's. Danny has rebounded nicely from his initial hiccup, but we all understand keeping the little lady happy thinking you really do like Kelly Clarkson, "no really I do." Pat has shown some eclectism, switching genres better than Kenny Rogers. I have to admit that "Cowgirl in the sand" is one of the best songs ever recorded, just a liitle unsure of its applicability to this site. Oops, I almost from Steven's immediate family. Maybe because I haven't seen much of anything from Amy. The cold Flagstaff air must freeze the creative juices as Mickey has also yet to grace us with his thoughts. So, after much thought, the leader board looks like this:

1. The Novak family with special guest, the wizard of Tucson, Scooter
2. The King family- mostly thanks to Patrick's ability to swing both ways
3. My family. We could be number one but Mick and Mary Anne are bringing us down
4. The Ryan Manos's - I still am impressed with the Elvis Costello posting
5. The Demore's - Although I could easily call this the Breanne's since the rest are incommunicado
6. The Conn. contingent - less is not better
7. All the SU friends - Josh Groban and Tom Petty - come on, dig a little deeper

My post for the day is in memory of John Stewart. The song is "Pirates of Stone County Road." It reminds of us of the power of the imagination. My wish is that you can close your eyes and let your imagination take you somewhere better.

Mudge said...

OK Jim, I have kept relatively silent, except for my Our House (Crosby Stills Nash)posting for his after chemo healing playlist and Kryptonite, because my family always makes fun of my taste in music. At the risk of embarrassing them I add one of my favorites -Miracles by Jefferson Starship and the theme song from Chariots of Fire. Adrian - enjoyed the poem, and if you get hungry I'm sure that soup is still in the fridge. Steven - hugs, kisses, prayers, and praise for hanging in there. You're gonna make it and I'd be holding your hand if I could. Love ya, Mom

Ok, I'm out. I throw my chips in. I didn't recognize a single song on your list Jen because I'm sure none of them are from the 70's and I seem to have stood still in that time warp of my highschool and college days. However, my kids AND Tom (who was able to move on musically)say you have great taste in music. I'll have to borrow Steven's Ipod when his selection is all down loaded and catch up. He did sit out on the back patio this weekend with Jen facing those gorgeous Catalina mountains, bundled up in his new blanket from the Sellers listening to Greg's music. First one to actuallly get a CD down and he sent some great beef barley soup along with it. Go Uncle Greg! Maw Maw also sent chili which was wonderful as well. She is unable to post comments but would like to. One of you cousins needs to get over and help her out. Jean

unclejim said...

I am curious as to what song Jen thinks is the Bodean's best. I would put both She's a Runaway and Fadeaway before Good Things, although not necessarily germaine to this site. Cory Hart???? Great title for this site, but great song? As Macaully Cauklin would say, "I don't think so." But it was nice to see you get up the nerve to place some aspirants to the title of Best Song for Steven. It does seem like you would know, but then again if I was in the same situation Mary Anne might be posting Pink Floyd's "Money" as in life insurance proceeds. So love-mates may not be the best source of songs, but I will give you the better of the doubt as you are still in the enamored phase. Let's see how well you do when you have been together as long as we have (I think the Demore's might be the only ones together long enough to pass judgement).

My song for the day was written for an entirely different purpose, but the words somehow fit. "We shall overcome". I like Springsteen's version but Peter. Paul & Mary do a pretty good job also.

So far I have posted...
1. Pump it up- Elvis Costello
2. La grange ZZ Topp
3. Can't Repeat-The Offspring
4. Remember the Name- Fort Minor

All of these are excellent pump up songs.

Okay, Jim. Take it easy. I did list two songs – and they were good ones. As Greg said, it’s quality, not quantity. And, if it were up to my parents, all future suggestions would be Neil Diamond. However, in order to restore the DeMore name, we have a few more recommendations:
I’m A Believer – The Monkees
Help is on Its Way – Little River Band
Taking Care of Business – BTO
Move Along – All American Rejects
Dani California – Red Hot Chili Peppers (Supposedly, Lance Armstrong’s Power Song)
Juke Box Hero – Foreigner
Somewhere Over the Rainbow – Isreal Kamamawiwo’ole (A nice Hawaiian version that can take your mind elsewhere)
Beat It – Michael Jackson
You Can Go the Distance – Hercules Soundtrack
World’s Greatest – R. Kelley
Cyclone – Baby Bash
To Legit to Quit – MC Hammer
Movies – Alien Ant Farm
Thunder – ACDC
Tuff Enuff – Fabulous Thunderbirds
Beat It – Michael Jackson
Short People – Randy Newman (We heard that Hillary Clinton is short.)

First of all, I have to come clean on my mea culpa of yesterday. I repeated a song already posted by Lizzie. I beg forgiveness as the Heath Ledger thing had me so distraught, i wasn't thinking clearly.

In light of Steven's new best friend, Nurse Ratchet, today's song has to be Prine's "Some Humans ain't Human."

Jenny Hawkins said...

Bethany, did you know Neil Diamond wrote I'm a Believer?!!!! Huge fan here, so I'll suggest one for Steven's pump-me-up playlist: You Got to Me -- you'll be tapping your feet and playing air tambourine. I think I can convert you with that one, Bethany.

Steven: another Neil -- Song Sung Blue, for when you feel down and since you are so good at making up songs.

Jim, I don't want to hear about Neil unless you can tell me you have been to one of his concerts and honestly say you did not sing along.

unclejim said...

The very first concert I went to was Neil Diamond and Linda Ronstadt with my cousin, Jim Scott. I am a big fan. One of my favorites is the entire African Suite from the album Tap Root Manuscript. It became a Christmas play in our household when we were young, although I am not sure why. But, my favorite song of his is the Buffy Saint Marie penned "Until its Time to Go." I also am fond of his version of the old Holly's tune "He Ain't Heavy, He's my Brother", although I prefer the version by The Housemartins. So, no argument from me on Neil.

You also won't get a rise out of me on The Monkees. Like Blink 182, although entirely different genres, their music is all peppy. They don't have a dirge in their repretoire that I know of. And anyone who covers a John Stewart tune is ok by me.

I still want to know what you consider to be the best Bodean's song. I have been a fan of theirs for a long time, but really prefer their early stuff. To illustrate just how long I have been a fan, I bought their first album on vinyl.

As is obvious by the numer of duplicates lately, it is becoming more difficult to come up with ideas. But I will post my song for the day later. We are still planning on coming down on Saturday and my hope is to have a summary of all of these posts on an iPod for Steven's easy listening pleasure. But, I have to admit I will need to swallow my pride when i download some of these ideas from iTunes. I really need Pat C. here to help me with the Hip Hop. He is a walking compendium of that genre.

Remember Steven, don't put anything in your stomach that you don't want to see again.

Searching - Blackalicious
On the Road Again - Willie Nelson

I'm loving these suggestions and have a few of my one that hadn't been thrown out yet. I tried to steer clear of the obvious ones, and those already covered. Some of them are just fun and have lots of energy, and others just have outstanding lyrics- all great though. Maybe not Kelly Clarkson great, but still pretty good.

Just make you want to smile and/or dance:
A little respect- Erasure
Up all night- Counting Crows
Drunken Lullabies- Flogging Molly
This Way- Dilated Peoples
Me and Julio down by the Schoolyard- Paul Simon
This time of year- Better than Ezra
Dragonfly- Ziggy Marley
Rudy Sountrack
Ooh La la - Faces

Good Lyrics:
Bonito- Jarabe de Palo
La vida es un caranval- Cecilia Cruz
High Tide or Low Tide- Bob Marley (though Ben Harper and Jack Johnson have a maybe even better version)
Beautiful World- Colin Hay
Siyahamba- (whoever sings it)
Witness- Ben Harper
I shall not walk alone-Ben Harper
Shelter from the Storm- Bob Dylan
Hallelujah- Martin Sexton

I'll keep thinking/listening. Hope you enjoy them Steve.

Steven, you are Popeye the Sailor Man -- you did your fluoride treatment after you threw up, when your mouth hurt and you felt so terrible. You should be proud of your strength. Keep that fighting attitude and keep smiling. However, you don't seem to like your wheatgrass. I suggest "Popeye" by Popeye to keep you motivated to eat yer spinach (and keep me off yer back).

Popeye

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man,
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man.
I'm strong to the finich
Cause I eats me spinach.
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man.

I'm one tough Gazookus
Which hates all Palookas
Wot ain't on the up and square.
I biffs 'em and buffs 'em
And always out roughs 'em
But none of 'em gets nowhere.

If anyone dares to risk my "Fisk",
It's "Boff" an' it's "Wham" un'erstan'?
So keep "Good Be-hav-or"
That's your one life saver
With Popeye the Sailor Man.

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man,
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man.
I'm strong to the finich
Cause I eats me spinach.
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man.

And two more songs for the sailor:
"john b. sails" (because i know you like) - the brothers four
"i can see clearly now" -- after a day of rain and a few days of much discomfort, keep your positive attitude! and eat your wheatgrass.

You'll beat those weak Palookas!

This family has way too much pride and potential for that. Read the god damn blog and stop repeating! Second, I am more than happy to be accepted into the Novak family as my previous one was filled with back-stabbers who have absolutely no music taste (excluding Pat and Mickey...they're awesome). And now, the moment you all have been waiting for, my song for the night:

Jen's Popeye/Poppie he Sailor Man song and analogy is a great one. Steven, now that Jen has admittedly taken over the bugging you about what goes in I am gratefully off the hook. I know full well that soup will still be there and I'll be dumping it down the garbage disposal tomorrow. I will let that go. It's a good sign that when she does it, you smile. It shows good nurturing instincts in her and I know you appreciate that quality. I think you should "Hold on to What You Got" (hinting of another song possibility). I wish you would post the inspirational sayings you have hung up around your bedroom. The Dr. Seuss one is my favorite, but it is too long to remember. The short one I can remember is: "Don't be a Baby" by Jenny Rae Hawkins (actually written by Steven) I hope you can still laugh when you read them.

Everyday, I'm anxious to look to see if there's a new posting from you. They're always interesting, funny, and kick ass inspiring.
I have a few humble offerings that I put on a cd and will get to you with the next "pony express" rider to Tucson (sound like it might be Lynn):
1. The Kids are Alright (The Who); 2. I Want to be Sedated (The Ramones) - I thought this might be literally true for you many days. I also know they're big Bush supporters (hard to find among rockers), but mainly, it's a great up tempo song. 3. Hey, Ho, Let's Go (Ramones) see No. 2, above. 4. Gasolina (Jimmy Borges) When Ted got back form Costa Rica, he introduced us to this one - said the dance floors were full every time this one came on - I know why. 5. Foggy Mountain Breakdown (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band); 6. Feet of a Dancer (Maura O'Connell) Feel free to substitute "Runner" for "Dancer."
8. Electric Avenue; 9. Amie (Pure Praire League) - The song for which your wonderful baby sister was named; 9. Koufax Perfect Game - This is my favorite. By 1965 when he pitched his perfect game, Sandy Koufax had a horribly arthritic elbow on his pitching arm. On days he pitched, they say his elbow swelled to the size of a graprfruit and he'd be in the club house with his elbow immersed in ice long after the place cleared out. Despite his extreme pain, Koufax pitched 26 complete games that season. This recording of Vin Scully calling the last inning of that game is a classic. The only thing I'm not fond of is taht it came at the expense of a club from the North side of Chicago. I hope this is inspiring to you Moke, but I assure you, it pales in comparison to how you inspire me with your strength and humor on a daily basis. Love you, Steven.

Ok, over the weekend I had the pleasure of listening to almost every song posted. I am still convinced that the overall best collection comes from Bethany and Breanne (with a little help from Tim). But, overall best song goes to Skooch for the Social D song, "Angel's Wings". I also have to admit to liking some of Wacky's choices. Most surprising was the Millicon song "Pepper". And my opinion didn't change of the Destiny's Child song. Beyonce' should concentrate on the visual arts, as that is where her strength lies. And worst overall song belongs to Pennywise, the only one I had to skip after a minute or so.

Overall, the list of songs is pretty impressive and well thought out. I hope we didn't all peak too early though. We need to keep the songs flowing.

In that vein, my song for the day is Al Stewart's "Hipposong". Just whimsical enough to lighten the mood.

I don't know if this is one you'd want to actually put on your ipod since I believe it is an old Karen Carpenter song. I have never been a big female vocalist fan, but I found myself singing this when my friend Mary Heiland told me to "Keep a song in your heart." The first song that came to mind was "Ooh ooh child, things are gonna get easier. Ooh ooh child things will be brighter...some day." Hang in there if only by your fingertips. Last Sunday at the teen mass at St. Thomas, near Tim's house, their closing words were, "It's 6 o'clock and you are loved." That was Fr. Pat's closer. I wonder if he cloned that from someone else or vice versa? Anyway...It's 9:40 and you are so loved. Mom

Hey Steven,

So, this morning as on every Friday morning, Pat goes into work before I and I have to walk about a mile to my office....usually I bitch and complain about it the whole time (to myself), but today, with you (and Linds) as my inspiration, there was a smile on my face. I even tried to enjoy the humidity....which proved a bit more daunting. In celebration of crossing the hump in terms of treatment, how about Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi. My guess is someone already wrote that....sorry scoot!

Jean, I love that you put Ooooh, Child....I LOVE that song too. I first heard it on one of Pat's skate videos and now everytime he goes to watch one (which is quite often) I try to convince him to play "the one with that song." It is so uplifting.

If you are reading this, it also means that I finally figured out how to post for myself....I asked someone to translate it for me.....Little Victories are a big deal here :) I also believe that is a Darden Smith song and might be a good addition to the Ipod.

Love you

unclejim said...

Darden Smith's "Little Victories" is a very good choice. To celebrate the halfway point, how about Stewart's "Bring it Home". Just skip over the line "ballin' on the road is a poor man's score." It never made any sense to me anyway.

My song for the night is Mat Kearny's "I won't back Down"

I think this list needs a little Boy George. I mean, really, can you even say Boy George without smiling. If the list can survive a NKOTB song, it can surely handle the Boy.

I have another one. I like this one because besides being a really good song, it holds the record for longest song title. It is Shawn Phillips, "She was waiting for her mother at the station in Torino and you know that I love you baby but it is getting too heavy to laugh"

I think another song for tonight is to send those lips to "Rehab".

Well, it looks like I am going to have to go it alone posting new songs in the final stretch. Everyone must have tapped out the limits of their song data base.

I think for today I am going to recommend Fee Waybill and the Tubes, "White Punks on Dope." I good fightin' song.

I am not sure you are even checking this part anymore, but your entry today convinced to finally post a song I have been hanging onto because it can be interpreted wrong. But now I am convinced it is a song for you. "Moonshadow" I know you have privately been affected worse than you let us in on. But it does seem that you have been able to bounce back from the havoc being wrecked on your body. This song pretty much says that.
