Blueberries on August 19th

As most of you know, Steven loved blueberries. Tom and Jean had probably convinced him this blue cupcake was a blueberry. This other photo suggests the likely destruction...

As Jean has planned, you might take this day to remember him with a sweet, blueberry treat, guilt-free...it would make him happy.

Last year someone gave Jean a Happy Birthday card, which is fitting. I am sure August 19th, 1981, was one of the three most wonderful days for Tom and Jean. Jean, tonight I look forward to your baked, blueberry treat!

Somewhere in between the innocent, blueberry pie attacking toddler and the (mostly) serious grad student are some crazy birthday stories, from my understanding. I hope all remember the (too few) happy birthday adventures you shared with him.

We love you so much Steven!

I remember with such clarity the day Steve was born. I was so jealous of Jean, as I was 7 months pregnant with Ted and so ready for the whole thing to be over...until I saw Steve. Not that he wasn't incredibly beautiful, but he was huge. He looked like a toddler!! I just kept looking at him and thinking to myself, tiny Jean delivered that chunk!! My anticipation to deliver suddenly turned to panic.

That day changed all our lives for the better. I am forever grateful to have had the influence of such an outstanding individual in my life, and I am equally grateful for the gift of Jenny, who reminds us each day just how special Steve was, by bringing someone as awesome as she has been, into our lives. Happy Birthday my sweet Steve. I love you so much.

First thing this morning, Mom and I had a good cry. But then I realized how lucky we are to have had Steven for as long as we did. Jenny the pictures that you posted brought back so many memories. He was the cutest baby boy.

I don't remember specific birthdays, but I do remember that Jean, Mary and I would start planning birthdays in May-Danny's month, because inevitably whatever Danny would get, Steven would get in August, and Ted in November. I do remember the whole street hockey phase. I just remember we were all at a picnic at North Mountain (probably right after Ted's birthday) and the boys were playing hockey. Everybody had hockey gear (Billy probably got the same stuff on his birthday in October), but poor Patrick didn't have the popular gear (his birthday is January, and he was still too young), so he got in the game as fast as he could without the helmet or knee pads, but used an old broom we found for his stick....I think he took some ribbing that day, but he didn't mind, he was just glad to play with the BIG boys.

We were and are so blessed.....the cousins were and will always be just an extension to all of families. Such unconditional love exists to this day.

I celebrate your birth today Baby, but more importantly, I celebrate your life. A life that would make anyone proud. We all love you so much and our memories will keep you alive in our hearts forever.

I'll being seeing you,
Aunt Lynnie

Happy Birthday wishes with fondest memories! I ran across this poem tonight written in memory of one of my school's fellow teachers. How appropriate to run across it tonight. Although it is not true in all cases - Steven is "the Best."

HE ONLY TAKES THE BEST
God saw he was getting tired
and a cure was not to be.
So he put his arms around him
and whispered, "Come with Me". With tear-filled eyes we watched
him suffer and fade away, Although we loved him deeply,
we could not make him stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
his hard working hands put to
rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to
us HE ONLY TAKES THE BEST.
STEVEN,
You will always be in our hearts and prayers. You will be forever missed. We Love you...Uncle Dan and Aunt Elaine

Well, i'm at Mikey's house, got a week gig being a nanny for our old coaches, the Montgomeries of seattle u fame. anyway, kelly and I went on a run today, made some great pasta in mikey's kitchen without him(he's in michigan officiating a wedding, yes mikey officiating.) anyway, mikey's running streak is over four hundred now, kelly fullerton's is at 27, and well, mine is at 1.

some might say one isn't a streak, but i think if i put it to a vote with steve, he'd let it pass on the grounds of ''intent'' on a second, thus fulfilling the definition of ''a streak''. So I intend to begin a bit of my own streak, with many memories of steve coming on these runs, and we'll keep checking back in with the blog, just to make sure we're all paying attention.

ie1I AM paying attention. Good to hear from you and to be kept in touch with what is going on in the Great Northwest with you all. Good luck with your "streak". You've inspired me to head out the door. I took the day off to take care of some plumbing problems. Might as well take advantage of our nice weather. So, does officiating translates to Mikey went online to be a certified minister? Love, blessings, and best wishes to all who visit this site. Jean

I've been thinking a lot about Steven lately. Well, I always think about him, but it is more intense. We are approaching the two year anniversary of his death, Ryan is in El Salvador on an immersion trip, Jenny and Steve would've graduated and been embarking on a new phase of their lives together, Mikey's running challenge anniversary charging on unbroken!!, so many of his friend's getting together without him gathered in Phoenix... Who knows. Maybe a combination of all these things, and the fact that I don't have the diversion of work during the summer, contributes to missing him so much. Regardless, I often think how difficult losing Steven was for so many of you. Not just his immediate family (Jenny, of course, is included in that). Somehow, that helps to know I am not the only one who misses him. So, I thank those of you who think with me of him and still grieve, but live life to its fullest making the most of the days' opportunities to open ourselves to helping others. I love you all for how you filled his life with fun and love. Jean

the Manos Cavalry rides tomorrow at 11am. starting at mt spokane then headed out the centennial trail to Sandpoint. about 7 ex Seattle U runners made the trip this year. so we'll be filling about 3-4 peoples spots. a good 12 legs to divy out. Thanks for the support and I'd like to open up next year's race to whomever would want to fly up and run in Steve's honor... the Name won't change, even if the runners do.

Good luck to the Manos Calvary on your race to Sandpoint. I bet it's beautiful there, and I would love to be cheering you on. I'd even be willing to run a leg...a short one...itty bitty...but I'm already back at work. School starts early here. It is Ryan's senior year. If he decides to be a Zag next year you will have at least 2 of us there. Have so much fun.
